The Patchouli Curtain!

California, being one of the original Soviet members of the United States of America, has raised taxes on just about everything through the roof. Is it any surprise, then, when faced with the inevitable results thereof—there's a reason why so many Californians end up here in Northern Virginia, after all—that the legislators of that vaunted State corral of buffoons have come up with the ultimate solution:

Build a really giant wall around the State, and refuse to allow anyone to leave!

Oh wait, you say that didn't work in the past?

Alright then, the General Assembly has the next best thing in dictatorial sovietism:

Tax the ever-living heck out of anyone who leaves!

Brilliant, товарищи!

Who would dare to leave such a People's Paradise, anyway?

Unless I am mistaken, peasants (under $250k a year) can leave, "milk cows" must stay

Thought they wanted the cheap migrant workers. If they only keep the very rich through repressive taxation, then who will pick the crops?

# Impose a one-time 55% wealth tax on assets exceeding $20 million held by a California resident or held in California by nonresident.
# Impose an exit tax of between 36.5% to 54.3% on both income and unrealized appreciation in asset values over $5 million when a resident dies or leaves California.

HOLY FREAK!!! I have never understood the constitutionality of the death and wealth tax. And now we have an EXIT TAX? That is wholly unconstitutional. As well as the one-time 55%tax on assets.

Well, if you don't tax the majority of the population, you have to tax the rich alone.

Heck, all one would need to do to escape the exit tax is try to find a Californian to sell your assets to, move, and then buy new assets somewhere else.
