On Volunteers

The Associated Press utilizes a remarkably unusual word to describe the rebel fighters in Libya:

Libyan volunteers clean their weapons on the outskirts of the eastern town of Brega, Libya, Monday, March 7, 2011. Libyan warplanes launched multiple air strikes Monday on opposition fighters regrouping at an oil port on the Mediterranean coast, the second day of a harsh government counteroffensive to thwart a rebel advance toward Moammar Gadhafi's stronghold in the capital Tripoli. I'd post the photo here, but considering how cranky the AP tends to get with me, perhaps I won't.
