Ayers said that the price had come down from $800 per fixture to $300, meaning that the lights would theoretically pay for themselves in less than 10 years, due to estimated reductions in electricity usage.
“I think this fixture was $800 a year ago, and it’s now just over $300, so in one year that’s a pretty significant savings – which allows us to begin using this kind of equipment and technology, because we’re able to get a good return on investment. At $800 a fixture we can’t get a good return on investment, but when it gets down to $300 – and I’m sure it will go even lower – we’re able to get a good return on investment.
You've gotta love that Government logic—This cost that we didn't need to spend is now a little bit over half of what it was a year ago, so why not just jump in and spend spend spend right this second?
That MacBook Pro I've been eyeballing (but don't need) was $5,000 last year, but is now available for the low-low price of $3,000—so I just HAD to buy it.
The good news is that Washington is well on its way to spending our nation into oblivion within the next two years—Just think of all the savings you'll get when the last light in Congress goes out for good.

What is funny though, they are spending this money, during a down turn in our economy, at a time when the Congress has no money, and just a couple year after the cafeteria already went under a $4.5 million remodel project that was finished up around 2004. Why didn't they buy the lights then?
Also, how much energy is it going to save when you are now using that saving to buy electricity to power the auto-shades? They were manually powered before and that cost nothing to power. But now, it will cost more for the always on light detectors as well.
Hmmm.. how many shovel ready jobs did that create? and.... THIS IS FOR JUST ONE ROOM. What the story doesn't tell you is the total cost of the project for all rooms. And, it doesn't tell you exactly what the difference in power consumption will be.
